Overview
Inspired by “somatics” — physical awareness and experiences within the body — <Soma’s Garden>(2023) practices mindfulness with audiences in real-time 3D interactive environments and soundscapes. Combining field recordings, voice narrations, and melodic tunes, the immersive soundscape invites viewers to engage in somatic meditation with ‘Soma’, the guide and caretaker of this virtual garden. Emphasizing interspecies relationships and intimacy with various flora and organisms, the performance encourages imagining alternative subjectivities akin to non-human entities within and around our bodies. Through this, the performance aims for audiences to experience the sensations of de-personalized self-awareness, tranquility, emotions of care, and a sense of connection.

<소마의 정원>(2023)은 2023년 ACC 레지던시 참여 작가 조지 히라오카 클로크와 염인화의 공동 연구 관심사인, 비-인간, 생태적 사고, 명상 간의 교차점에서 비롯됩니다. 작품은 신체 내부의 물리적 인식과 경험을 연구하는 “소마틱스(somatics)”에서 영감을 받았으며, 이 가상의 정원 속 다양한 동식물 및 유기체들이 마음챙김 실천을 위한 환경을 구성합니다. 이 때, 관객은 정원의 안내자이자 관리자인 ‘소마’와 함께 소마틱 명상을 수행하도록 초대됩니다. 상호성과 친밀성을 강조하는 <소마의 정원>에서, 우리의 몸 안팎의 비-인간적 존재들과 동일시하고 교감하는 상상력을 촉구합니다.
